Old Dogs Find New Homes in November

Humane society offers deals for senior dogs and senior discount

Old dogs may not be able to learn new tricks, but during November, they may find a new home.

This month, the San Diego Humane Society is offering deals on adoption fees for pets 7-years-old and older. The fees for the elderly dogs drop to $25 from $50, and the animals all have up-to-date vaccinations, microchips and are spayed or neutered.

“These pets usually get overlooked for the younger puppies and kittens, and people tend to think they’re going to have health problems,” said Kelly Herwehe, spokesperson for the San Diego Humane Society. “They just want a home to live out their golden years.”

Among the benefits of adopting an older pet, Herwehe said older dogs and cats are mellower, and there is no guesswork as to how much they will grow and develop.

“What you see is what you get,” she said. This is especially beneficial for older indviduals in need of a companion that won't be very high maintenance.

Also during November, seniors ages 55 and older are eligible for waived adoption fees when they adopt senior pets, as part of the Seniors for Seniors program.

Other Humane Society specials include June Meow Madness, with reduced kitten fees in lieu of “kitten season,” and October’s National Adopt a Shelter Dog month, with reductions for shelter dogs.

Check out NBC7’s Second Chance segment on Wednesdays at noon to meet some of the animals up for adoption from the Humane Society.
