Suspected Carjacking Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting in North Park

A suspected carjacking led to an officer-involved shooting Saturday night in North Park, San Diego Police Department said.

San Diego police responded to reports of shots fired at Howard Avenue and Arizona St. at around 9:30 p.m., Sgt. Michael Tansey confirmed.

The incident reportedly began when the suspect carjacked a vehicle at about 9:20 p.m. near Maryland St. and Madison Avenue, Lt. Martha Sainz said.

The suspect approached the victim at gunpoint and and took a white 2019 Subaru Outback along with the victim's belongings.

Officers located and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect drove away, starting a "high-speed pursuit" that ended in North Park. After officers exited their vehicle and gave commands to the driver, he began ramming the police car with the stolen vehicle and pointed a handgun at the officers, Sainz reported.

The officers fired their weapons in return. The suspect stopped ramming the police vehicle and police were able to take him into custody, SDPD said.

A handgun was located in the suspect's vehicle.

Nobody was injured, Sainz told NBC 7.

The suspect's name will not be released as he is 17 years old, officials said.
