OfferUp Seller Attacked and Robbed at South Park Starbucks Has Warning

Victim of robbery and assault urges caution when selling items to strangers

A San Diego man attacked and robbed while sitting on a Starbucks patio Tuesday night says people selling things through sites like OfferUp and Craigslist should be careful about where they meet strangers.

Christopher listed an iPhone X for sale on OfferUp and agreed to sell it to a man for $725. The buyer suggested a Starbucks store on the corner of 28th and B streets in South Park as a meeting location.

Christopher says two men in hoody sweatshirts showed up and, after a brief conversation, grabbed the phone and took off. A third man watching from nearby punched Christopher in the back of the head.

"It's crazy to think Starbucks isn't safe enough to meet someone. We were here, it's 7 o'clock, lit, patio full of people, and this still happened," said Christopher.

Police are investigating the assault and robbery, but haven't found the suspects.

San Diego police encourage people to meet at a police station when buying and selling items of value. They say most divisions have an officer at the front counter between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

SDPD is investigating the robbery.
