A man was arrested after trying to attack a police officer with a pickaxe, according to officials.
Oceanside police gang detectives were working in the 1500 block of Higgins Street around 8:30 p.m. Friday when the incident happened.
According to officials, the suspect came at the officers with a pickaxe, not a shovel as initially reported.
Officials said the man swung his weapon and struck the police car, just inches away from the detective inside. The detective was not injured, though paramedics did respond to the scene.
The suspect was arrested and booked on felony charges, including assault on an officer.
