Oceanside Fire Burns South of SR 76

Fire officials are getting bad indications of things to come this fire season after they put out a brush fire in Oceanside Sunday.

To make matters worse, the county is under a red flag warning until Tuesday.

The flames sparked around 11:45 a.m. just south of the intersection of Mission Avenue and Airport Road. It was on the south side of State Route 76.

Reaching about one acre, officials say the fire threatened homes before crews got a line around it by 12:20 p.m.

"This is May, but the fire was burning as if it was July," said Battalion Chief Peter Lawrence with the Oceanside Fire Department. "We had 8 to 10-foot flames lengths coming off the fire as it was being pushed, and that's a pretty good indicator of the kind of season we're going to have."

Fire officials said they had a suspicious person nearby, though they did not say if that person was responsible for the blaze.
