Oceanside Bouncer Arrested in Man's Death Near Bar

A bouncer at an Oceanside bar has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in the death of a 27-year-old man.

Oceanside police said Mark Girard Jr. died after a fight involving bouncer Derrick Lamont Belser at the rear entrance of the Fire Water Saloon in the 300 block of North Tremont. It happened just after 2 a.m. on Dec. 28.

Police said Belser knocked Girard down, causing Girard to strike his head on the ground. When officers arrived in the area, they found Girard unconscious at an apartment in the 500 block of Sportfisher Drive, about three blocks away from the bar.

He was taken to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, where he died two days later.

Police issued a plea for information from the public on Jan. 1. An arrest warrant was issued for Belser on Thursday; he turned himself in the following day.

Belser was booked on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon and battery with great bodily injury.
