Officials Investigate Fire at Oak Crest Middle School

A fire that damaged documents inside Oak Crest Middle School Saturday is under investigation

A fire that damaged student documents inside a San Diego-area middle school is under investigation, San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials said Monday.

Fire broke out inside the administration building at Oak Crest Middle School on Balour Drive at approximately 3:40 a.m. Saturday, setting off the fire alarm system.

When firefighters arrived, they could see flames shooting from the windows of the building.

The school’s counseling and attendance offices sustained the bulk of the damage. On Monday, staff members set up offices in rooms near the library. The principal said he is trying to keep school running as normal despite the damage.

Images released by the principal show extensive fire damage to the administrative offices including holes in the roof. No classrooms were affected.

As of Monday morning, sheriff's investigators said evidence has been sent to a lab. They'll wait for results before classifying the fire as intentional.

Oak Crest Middle School is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District.
