Nunez's Son Released from Jail

A former Assembly speaker's teenage son charged with the murder of a San Diego college student has been released from jail, authorities said Wednesday.

Esteban Nunez, 19, posted bail Tuesday just a few hours after a judge had halved the bail amount from $2 million to $1 million, San Diego County jail records showed.

Nunez is the son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.

Esteban Nunez and three other defendants pleaded not guilty last week to murdering San Diego Mesa College student Luis Santos outside a fraternity party in October.

The defendants are accused of jumping a group of local college students in front of SDSU's Peterson Gym on Oct. 4. Three of the victims were stabbed.

Co-defendant Rafael Garcia had also posted bail and was being processed for release Wednesday morning, authorities said. The other two, Ryan Jett and Leshanor Thomas, remained jailed. All four live in Sacramento.

On Tuesday, judge David Szumowski found their initial bail was set too high and reduced the amount for all the defendants.
