Firefighters Contain Blaze At Pendleton

A nearly 2,000 acre wildfire at the North County Marine Corps base is 100 percent contained, officials said Thursday.

The fire, however, is not completely controlled, and officials stressed that areas within the containment area could flare up. The change in weather conditions-- the wind has died down and temperatures are cooler on Thursday -- helped firefighters in their efforts. 

The blaze did not cause any injuries or damage to buildings on the base.  It was fully surrounded about 16 hours after it began.

The fire erupted Wednesday at 3:35 p.m. as hot, dry weather gripped Southern California. Aircraft attacked the flames and firefighters set backfires, working through the night to slow its advance. 

The flames were far from the populated part of the 125,000-acre base in northern San Diego County, but Camp Pendleton's golf course was evacuated as a precaution.

 Billowing smoke could be seen in neighboring counties. Some people in Los Angeles called 911 to report the smell of smoke today.
