No La Jolla Fireworks This Year San Diego

Anyone planning on cuddling under the skies for fireworks near La Jolla Cove on Wednesday needs to plan something else. There will be no fireworks display this year.

A grassroots effort to raise the $65,000 to fund a fireworks show fell through earlier this year, according to Debora Marengo.

Marengo said it's important that members of the community know about the cancellation so they can plan accordingly.

The fireworks fundraising efforts lost some major donors earlier this year because they had other interests, she said.

The La Jolla celebration has made headlines in recent years for different reasons.

In 2016, the fireworks show at the La Jolla Cove gained attention when a malfunction interrupted the show and five people operating the show narrowly avoided injury.

In 2014, the show was canceled due to lack of planning tied to a lawsuit. Environmental activists wanted to pull the plug because the pyrotechnics were launched over a protected marine sanctuary.
