No Celebration For Old Town Workers Let Go

Fired workers plan rally for Friday

For Old Town workers recently laid off, Cinco De Mayo wasn't a day of celebration.

Fired workers are protesting the reopening of the "Plaza del Pasado" in Old Town, formerly known as "Bazaar del Mundo." That's where more than 130 workers were fired earlier this year when new management took over.

Two restaurants and shops have since reopened, and about 150 people have been hired, but very few laid-off workers.  That's one reason their union is asking for a boycott.

Brigette Browning from the Hotel Workers Union said " We're asking the community to support us and to not eat here, to not patronize these establishments and to support us so the workers get their jobs back."

The new management, "The Old Town Family Hospitality Corps," said that they haven't violated labor laws by not retaining all of the laid-off workers.

The labor union plans to hold a rally at the "Old Town San Diego State Historic Park"  on Friday.
