A statement from Nike and mall operators said the concept is part of a larger strategy by Oregon-based Nike to move toward category-specific retail locations to better serve athletes. The Mission Valley store will have an enhanced digital service center, with gait analysis and other performance gauging technologies deployed on iPads and treadmills equipped with Nikeโ€™s own Nike+ software and hardware.

The store will host twice-weekly gatherings of Nike+ Run Club, with services involving the technology that lets runners track distance, pace, calories burned and other variables. The technology also features wireless connectivity allowing runners to sync and track their runs at NikePlus.com.

Nike also operates outlet stores in Alpine and San Ysidro. Fashion Valley, located on Friars Road, is San Diego Countyโ€™s largest regional mall and is owned by Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc.
