New Twist on Marriage Fight

Two Southern California college students, including one from San Diego, will begin gathering signatures today -- for a ballot initiative to take the word "marriage" out of California law.

Ali Shams, a senior at UCSD, Kaelan Housewright, who attends the California Institute of the Arts, want to substitute the term "domestic partnerships" for the word "marriage." The term would apply to all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation.

The two need to collect 700,000 signatures for an initiative, which would change the wording throughout state law.

Voters would then have the final say.
