New Science Building Opens at Miramar College

San Diego Miramar College is opening a $34 million science building addition to its campus.

The two-story, 49,000 square-foot facility includes an outdoor bio-pond and demonstration garden, a rooftop greenhouse and nine state-of-the-art laboratories. The roof also includes observatory stands and ports for 12 telescopes along with a telescope storage warehouse.

The first floor of the facility includes two lecture rooms, 30 private faculty offices and several collaboration and break areas, according to a news release. The second floor houses nine laboratories with 3,000 square feet of specialty science rooms, and technician offices.

The facility is on track to obtain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification by the United States Green Building Council, and was funded by Proposition N (a construction bond program that provides new teaching and learning facilities at City, Mesa and Miramar colleges and six Continuing Education campuses throughout San Diego).

The new science building is connected to the existing science building by a second floor bridge, according to the college.
