A new pedestrian facility and transit center at the San Ysidro Port of Entry are set to open to the public on Friday morning.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Tijuana Mayor Jorge Astiazaran and other international, federal, state and local officials will come together to host a ribbon cutting ceremony, marking the opening of the PedWest pedestrian crossing structure and the Virginia Avenue Transit Center (VATC).
PedWest will offer pedestrians 14 new lanes, with 12 of the lanes serving northbound travelers and two more that are reversible.
The structure is located on the west side of the San Ysidro Land Point of Entry and will serve as the primary northbound crossing point for the next phase of the port expansion project.
The VATC will serve as a terminal connecting people with the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s blue line trolley and buses, and will also function as a pick-up and drop-off point for pedestrians at PedWest. The center, located on the west side of the pedestrian bridge, allows for commuter vehicles as well as buses and taxis.
The ceremony will start at 10:45 a.m. in the southeast parking lot of the Outlets at the Border Mall in San Ysidro.
