New El Cajon Mayor Takes Office

The El Cajon City Council appointed a new mayor on Tuesday.

Councilman Bill Wells will fill the position left by longtime mayor Mark Lewis.

Lewis resigned Oct. 24 amid allegations he made racist comments about El Cajon’s Chaldean community.

Residents reacted to Wells’ appointment Tuesday afternoon. Some say they wanted a special election so they could choose a mayor, not council. Many say they want to see more diversity on council.

Wells said the people of El Cajon shouldn’t have to wait.

“I think it would be just pandering if we don’t appoint a mayor,” he said. “If we don’t appoint a mayor, we’re going to have to wait until June to have that leadership.”

Wells was voted in unanimously and takes office immediately.
