Dozens of elementary school students in National City were all smiles Tuesday as volunteers loaded them up with donated school supplies.
National City leaders, business leaders and police officers distributed items collected during an annual charity drive aimed at helping the city’s teachers and students.
Six local elementary schools received the special deliveries to make up for school budget cuts.
Sgt. Alex Hernandez with National City Police said it’s a tradition for the department.
Hernandez said this year a partnership with Costco allowed them to hand out free backpacks for every student at two of the schools.
“If we can, as a police department, as a community, help out our students, why won’t we,” Hernandez asked.
Some of the students told NBC 7 they thought the idea was “pretty cool” because some parents don’t have the money to spend on new school supplies.

They enjoyed their snacks while checking out new notebooks, crayons, combs and toothbrushes.
The remaining schools in the city will receive their school supplies at the end of the month, Hernandez said.
