She's a Rocket Man

A UC San Diego grad is set to slip the surly bonds of Earth in some pretty fancy company.

K. Megan McArthur, who earned her doctorate at UC San Diego, was born in Hawaii and grew up in Northern California before earning degrees from UCLA and UCSD.

Now, McArthur will be a crew member on the space shuttle Atlantis when it takes off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 12.
"At the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Megan conducted graduate research in nearshore underwater acoustic propagation and digital signal processing," NASA said in a news release, whatever that means.

What we do know is she was also a volunteer at the Birch Aquarium, where she conducted educational demonstrations for the public from inside that enormous kelp forest tank. The shuttle McAurther is on has a date with the Hubble Space Telescope.
