Multiple Spot Fires Burn in Lakeside

Multiple roadside spot fires burned in Lakeside Saturday over a one-mile stretch along State Route 67, fire officials said.

The small grass fires were first reported around 4:25 p.m., according to CHP officials, on both sides of the State Route 52 and northbound SR-67 interchange to Winter Gardens Boulevard.

Motorists reported visible smoke and flames off the highway.
Fire officials say at least nine different spot fires burned in the area.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including Lakeside, Santee and Barona fire departments, rushed to tackle the fires, and were able to knock them down a short time later.

CHP officials temporarily shut down some lanes while fire crews worked, issuing a SigAlert for part of the afternoon and evening.

The cause of these roadside grass fires is under investigation.
