More Marines: Major Expansion Expected Early

Ambitious troop-expansion goal two years ahead of schedule

The U.S. Marine Corps is preparing to expand its ranks by about 27,000, including at least 4,300 Marines who will be stationed in San Diego County, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Friday.

The plan is two years ahead of schedule.

Camp Pendleton is preparing to accommodate about 3,700 more Marines, while Miramar Marine Corps Air Station will add about 600, the paper reported.

The influx of new troops is expected to happen sometime before next September.
