Fans plan to pay homage to football legend Junior Seau today at 5:55 p.m., in honor of his iconic San Diego Chargers jersey number, 55.
The moment of silence for Seau on β5/5 at 5:55 p.m.β was first organized earlier this week by bloggers over at Fansided and Bolt Beat.
Bolt Beat editor Ernie Padaon told NBC 7 San Diego that his bloggers threw the idea out there via Twitter and it picked up steam when NFL star Reggie Bush retweeted it his 2.4 million followers.
Today, Seau fans around the country will take a moment to pay their respects to San Diego's hometown hero, who died of an apparent suicide on Wednesday.
On Saturday, NBC 7 San Diego spoke with Chargers chaplain Shawn Mitchell about the latest plans for Seauβs private family service.
Mitchell said that as far as he knows, the Seau family will not be having a private service this weekend.
He said theyβre planning a small, intimate private service for Seau for sometime next week.
Mitchell also said the Chargers are planning a celebration of Seauβs life, tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium.
