Mom Parking Car in Escondido Runs Over Toddler Son

A 3-year-old boy died Thursday after his mother ran over him with her car as she was attempting a parking maneuver in Escondido, police said.

Police said the mother took her son to Palomar Medical Center, where the toddler died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The mother was parking her car in a cul-de-sac in the 400 block of West Fourth Avenue. As she was waiting for her husband to back his truck out of the driveway so she could park, her son unfastened himself from his car seat and got out of the car, Escondido police said.

Police said the mom was unaware the toddler was outside the car when she pulled forward to park and then suddenly hit the boy.

Police said the case is under investigation, but do not expect to make any arrests.

Drugs and alcohol were not believed to be involved in the collision.

Thursday evening, witnesses described the scene of the accident as chaotic, with family members crying and screaming.

There are many parents of small children in the neighborhood who were sharing the family's grief.

"From a father's point of view that is the scariest thing anyone can go through," said neighbor Andre Mendez. "My son is 7 and I feel bad. Very bad for her."
