Administrators placed Mission Middle School on lockdown Thursday afternoon as Escondido Police investigate gunshots heard in the area.
As a precaution, the lockdown was ordered at about 1:30 p.m. for the school, located at 939 E. Mission Avenue.
Officers have taken at least one person into custody.
After about 15 minutes, police released the school from lockdown.
