Hazmat Called to Fire in Garage Filled With Mercury Thermometers

San Diego Fire-Rescue said the mercury was contained in a collection of at least 100 thermometers

A hazardous materials team cleaned up a garage overnight that was contaminated when a garage full of mercury-filled thermometers caught fire in Coronado Monday.

About 200 glass vials of mercury from a thermostat broke when a fire tore through a garage in the 400 block of D Avenue at about 2:45 p.m. Monday, contaminating the area, the city of Coronado said.

A neighbor was trying to put out the fire when firefighters arrived.

"His wife and I were very concerned but he is a very stubborn guy, a very community-oriented person. Just, I mean, I wasn't surprised to see him out there doing something," another neighbor said.

The fire damaged neighboring fences and completely destroyed the garage, the city said.

While the fire was out in about 10 minutes, the city said many of the firefighter's tools needed to be decontaminated. A hazardous materials team was called to clean up the mess.

Hazmat was at the scene for more than 12 hours.

There were no evacuations reported and investigators would look into what caused the fire to spark.
