Memorial Planned for Westerfield Judge

Memorial services are planned Monday for a Superior Court Judge who presided over many high profile cases.

Former San Diego Superior Court Judge William Mudd died Friday, March 20 at the age of 64.

He oversaw several major trials in San Diego County, including that of David Westerfield, who in 2002 was found guilty of murdering Danielle Van Dam.

Mudd retired in May 2005 after serving on the bench for 23 years, beginning on the municipal court. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Mudd was on the bench during more than 700 trials.

Mudd had been ill from cancer prior to his death. He was survived by a wife and two children.

Memorial services are planned at First Methodist Church of San Diego.
