The Marines plan on conducting a controlled burn at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar on Wednesday.
The burn will take place on the eastern portion of airfield and began at 9 a.m. Officials hope to have the fire out by noon.
The burn is part of annual fire maintenance at the air station, authorities said. They did not expect the smoke would have any effect on area traffic but did say that drifting smoke may be visible from Interstate 15.
