Love is in the air. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, one San Diego man surprised his sweetheart with a grand gesture Friday: a message of love written in the sky visible from the Fashion Valley area.
At around noon, a skywriting plane scrawled the following proclamation across the blue sky: “SAV (Heart) DS.”
The air message was from Sergio Velasquez, dedicated with love to his boyfriend, David Smith.
“It’s Valentine’s Day, and this is so original and unexpected,” Velasquez told NBC 7. “I was excited to do this.”
“It was a huge surprise. I’ve never had anything like that done for me before; I’ve only seen it done for others,” said Smith, grinning from ear-to-ear. “This was quite the treat. It’s definitely going to be remembered.”
Velasquez, admittedly, had some help with the skywriting.
He won a one-day promotional contest hosted by MasterCard and Uber in which he was given the chance to have a personal message written in the sky for a loved one on Valentine’s Day.

The “On-Demand UberSky” prize was worth $10,000. The romantic message could be a maximum of 12 characters.
Velasquez said coming up with the perfect message for Smith, in just one dozen short characters or less, was a challenge.
“Trying to find an appropriate message – something that’s short, sweet and can be conveyed really quickly, it was tough,” said Velasquez.
He mulled it over for a while, debating on whether to use nicknames or initials, before making his decision.
“I decided initials are great, that way you know exactly who it’s from and who it’s to,” he said.
His boyfriend, completely surprised by the gesture, was thrilled, saying it made this Valentine’s Day extra special.
“I was told to look up and saw the message in the sky,” Smith said.
Though the love note faded relatively quickly in the breezy blue sky, Velasquez said he was happy with how it all turned out.
“It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be,” he said.
The couple said they planned to continue their Valentine’s Day celebration by spending the day together and going to dinner later. Check out the happy couple sky-gazing below:
