Man Stabbed, Killed by Possible Gang Member

A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death Wednesday night in Imperial Beach now sheriff's homicide detectives are on scene trying to piece together what happened.

"It's very surprising that it did happen,” Anita Procopio said.  “It's right next door to us, practically a couple houses down."

Deputies responded to a call just before 11 p.m. Wednesday night on the 1200 block of 13th St. and found Donniell Wilkins, 22, lying in a driveway. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Wilkins was standing with a friend when two men appeared in an alley shouting a gang-related statement, investigators said.  Wilkins approached the two suspects and one lunged at him, stabbing him at least once.  The suspects fled the scene.

"We have no reason to believe the victim was in a gang," Lt. Dennis Brugos said.

Neighbors in the area said they're fearful for their safety.

"I look at it now -- I can't even come out of my porch because someone might be arguing and might want to pull a knife on me," resident Geramy Moore said.

One suspect is described as having a thin build, shaved head and numerous tatoos on both arms.  The other is reportedly heavy-set.  One of the suspects rode away on a bicycle.
