Man Squatting on Train Tracks Killed

Pedestrian covered ears before impact: witnesses

A man was fatally struck by a train Saturday night after he squatted down on a set of Oceanside tracks with his back turned from the approaching coaster and his hands placed over his ears, Encinitas police said.

The pedestrian, whose age and identity have not been released, died at the scene at about 10:14 p.m. at 250 Surfrider Way.

Witnesses said the man placed his hands over his ears as if to block out the sound, police said.

Authorities described the pedestrian as having short black hair and wearing a brown baseball cap, blue long sleeve shirt and black pants.
