Man Mixing Explosives at Day Care Loses Hand: Deputies

Mother, brother arrested after incident

A man blew his hand off while mixing homemade explosives in a Southern California home that doubled as a pot farm and a child care center.

A hospital contacted authorities late Wednesday to report a patient with a hand injury, according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez. Authorities responded to the hospital and investigated the Lake Elsinore home of Benjamin Kuzelka, 23. Gutierrez said they found more explosives, a sophisticated marijuana growing facility and evidence that the home had recently been used as a state-licensed child care facility.

Law enforcement officials said Kuzelka's mother, Rebecca Kuzelka, and brother, Grey Kuzelka, were also arrested. They are both  accused of felony child endangerment, possession and manufacture of explosives, and possession/cultivation of marijuana, according to investigators. Benjamin has not been arrested, said a spokeswoman for the sheriff's department.

Authorities are investigating what type of explosives were being mixed.

No children were home at the time of the explosion.

The FBI and Los Angeles Police Department are assisting in the investigation.
