Life Jacket Found, Man Still Lost at Sea

The Coast Guard is searching for a 40-year-old man who tumbled into the ocean when a basket that was transferring him between ships snapped.

An 87-foot patrol boat from Coast Guard Sector San Diego scoured the waters through the night looking for the man, and an MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter joined the search at first light, said USCG Petty Officer 2nd Class Jetta Disco.

A life jacket that officials believe belonged to the man has been recovered.

The man had been on the oil tanker BH Thames, which was built last year and flies the flag of Singapore, and was switching to another vessel Wednesday night when the basket broke and he fell in the water.
