A Mexican man who raped and strangled a 84-year-old woman in San Diego County has been sentenced to 34 years to life in prison.
Alejandro Fernandez was sentenced Thursday for the 2001 attack on Gladys Conrad, a retired psychiatrist, at a Carlsbad senior housing complex.
He pleaded guilty in October to first-degree murder and rape. He also pleaded guilty to the 2004 attempted rape of a 64-year-old woman in Los Angeles.
Mexican authorities arrested him in 2009 and DNA linked him to both crimes.
