Man Kicks In Door of Blazing Home

A neighbor kicked in the door of an apartment that was on fire in Encinitas on Friday, but luckily no one was home, according to firefighters.

An Encinitas lifeguard captain called 911 at 11.44 a.m. after seeing smoke pouring from a two-story apartment building on 123 Jupiter Street. An apartment on the lower story was on fire, according to firefighters.

A man living in the apartment above smelled the smoke, ran downstairs and kicked down the door. No one was inside, firefighters said.

Approximately 20 people live in the apartment complex, which was built in 1974. Those home at the time were evacuated.

About 35 firefighters arrived on scene and had the flames under control by about 12:20 p.m.

One apartment was destroyed in the fire and the unit above suffered smoke damage, firefighters said.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
