Man Struck, Seriously Injured by Trolley

Police say the man was lying on the trolley tracks prior to being struck

A man was seriously injured overnight after being struck by a trolley in the Logan Heights area, the San Diego Police Department confirmed

Police say the incident happened just before 1 a.m. at the westbound trolley tracks on 25th Street and Commercial Street.

SDPD Lt. Paul Rorrison says a man, for unknown reasons, was lying on the across the tracks when the trolley came traveling through the area.

The trolley struck the man, and Lt. Rorrison says the man “became entangled underneath the trolley” as it proceeded westbound.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene to extricate the man, who was still conscious, from underneath the trolley. Lt. Rorrison says rescuers actually had to lift the trolley off the man’s body in order to free him. The process took about an hour.

The man, who’s between 45 and 50 years old, was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital with life-threatening injuries. His name was not released.

It is unknown how many people were riding the trolley when the man was hit.

Lt. Rorrison says the incident is under investigation. Officials believe the man on the tracks was under the influence of alcohol.

Trolley service on Commercial Street was shut down immediately following the late-night incident.
