Man Facing Manslaughter Charges in Detective's Death

A 77-year-old man is facing vehicular manslaughter charges in the death of a San Diego police detective, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Larry W. Steward, 49, was off-duty and riding to the east on State Route 94 in the Engineer Springs area when an oncoming Dodge Durango swerved into his path near Marron Valley Road about 10:30 a.m. Friday, according to the CHP and county Medical Examiner's Office.

Medics airlifted Steward, a San Diego resident, to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, where he was pronounced dead about 90 minutes later.

The motorist, 77-year-old Jose De Jesus Garcia-Gomez of Tecate, Mexico, was booked into county jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, CHP officials said.
