Man Dies After Walkway Collapse

A man who was walking under a covered wooden walkway downtown when it suddenly collapsed died Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office announced.

Tyrone Allen, 49, was transported to a local hospital, where after an extended stay, he was discharged to a nursing home. Allen experienced complications from his injuries and was pronounced dead at Scripps Mercy Hospital Wednesday morning.

16 people were hurt when the walkway came crashing down at 16th and Imperial in September 2007.  Many had just left Father Joe's shelter right across the street after a lunchtime meal.

Lawyers filed a lawsuit in 2008 saying the collapse left Allen a quadriplegic. Paramount Scaffold, Allgire General Contractors, and Studio 15 Housing Partners were all named as defendants in the case.
