Man Charged With Attempting to Kill Cop

A man was arrested Saturday night and charged with attempting to murder a Chula Vista police officer after he ran over the officer's foot with his vehicle while resisting arrest last month, police said.

James Martinez, 20, was detained at his apartment in the 1100 block of Florence Avenue in Imperial Beach at about 10 p.m.

The arrest stems from an April 23 incident when Martinez fractured an officer’s foot, police said.

Officers were pursuing Martinez and his companion, Sean O’Neil, 21, after Martinez critically shot a man in the 500 block of Davidson Avenue near Wild Wooly's Saloon in Chula Vista, police said.

Police reportedly spotted Martinez and O’Neil fleeing in a car, and the suspects drove into a cul-de-sac in the 500 block of Madrona Street.

Martinez tried to ram an officer’s cruiser as the officer fired shots at the suspects' vehicle, police said.

Both suspects escaped, but O'Neil was arrested about a week later at his father's apartment in the 400 block of Telegraph Canyon Road.

Martinez is a gang member, police said.
