Man Armed with Machete Robs Rancho Bernardo Gas Station

The store clerk told NBC 7 he initially thought the attempted robbery was a joke

A masked man armed with a machete robbed a San Diego gas station Tuesday, police said.

Officers said the suspect walked into the Shell gas station at 12507 Rancho Bernardo just after 8 a.m. and demanded cash three times.

The store clerk told NBC 7 he initially thought the attempted robbery was a joke.

Captain Joe Ramos said officers responding to the scene were flagged down by several witnesses.

Once they had his license plate, they worked with San Diego COunty sheriff's deputies to locate the suspect's vehicle.

Officials then surrounded a home on Avenida la Valencia in Poway that they believed to be the suspect's father's home.

The suspect came out of house and was taken into custody.
