A U.S. Navy SEAL accidentally shot himself in the head at a home in Pacific Beach, according to police.

The 22-year-old had returned from a bar at about 2:08 a.m. Thursday to a home on Grand Ave., according to police.

“He was in the company of a female. He was showing her his 9mm handgun,” said Lt. Andra Brown.
The woman, who he had met earlier in the evening, refused to take the gun, police said.

To show her it wasn’t loaded, police say the man put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

“He believed it to be unloaded and unfortunately he put it to his head and shot himself in the head,” said Lt. Brown.

He was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.

The Medical Examiner’s Office originally said that the man had died. The Navy later said he’s on life support.

“He was reported dead by the attending physician at 3:08 this morning, however he is currently on life support,” said Lt. Brown.

The 22-year-old had completed Navy SEAL training, according to multiple sources in the military.
