Major Changes to MTS Bus Routes Start Sunday

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) wants riders to beware of major changes coming to some of its most popular bus routes.

The MTS is making alterations to 26 routes across the county as part of its Transit Optimization Program. The changes will take effect Sunday, June 10.

Included in the changes are route alterations, frequency increases and additional weekend services. San Diego MTS CEO Paul Jablonski said it’s all part of a $2 million ridership investment.

“We’re altering services, changing routes to make them quicker, to make them faster and where we’re getting great ridership, we’re adding services so we can get even more ridership,” Jablonski said.

The rising popularity of rideshare services, the countywide housing landscape and other factors have led to a decrease in ridership in recent years, Jablonski said. So the MTS is just trying to adjust.

“Every once in a while you stand back and look at what you do and ask ‘How do we adapt to the changes?’ That’s exactly what this Transit Optimization Project is.”

Jablonksi recommends riders download the MTS app or OneBUsAway app to simplify their commute.
