Winning Big, 10,000 Dollars Big

A local military man whos only goal was to help a local nonprofit ends up getting some much needed help himself.

After buying a few tickets for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Raffle, Ricardo Basila is the lucky winner of $10,000. He says the money couldn't come at a better time.

Basila purchased five tickets, at $150 a piece, hoping to win, but his main goal was supporting the organization.

"They help a lot of families," said Basila. The Ronald McDonald House creates and supports programs that help improve the lives of critically ill children all over the country, including here in San Diego. Profits from the raffle ticket sales go to charity.

Locally, Ronald McDonald House Charities is building a new 47 bedroom house that will serve families with critically ill children. It's set to open June 13.

Now retired from the Army, Basila said the family had recently gone through some tough times. Seven years ago his wife Karen, and the mother of their two sons, passed away.

"We were thinking about buying a house," said Basila. Now, with their winnings, a down payment is now within reach.

And although Karen isn't here, Basila believes that with this kind of luck, she can't be far away.
