The Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista, which was set to close its doors for good, will remain open, according to the center.
The non-profit aquarium was in danger of closing because of a $200,000 budget shortfall. According to the center, South Bay community members chipped in to keep it open.
San Diego Gas and Electric was planning to donate $2 million dollars to the center to offset the environmental impact of relocating the South Bay substation. However, SDG&E said the California Public Utilities Commission ruled the $2 million donation was unnecessary.
Living Coast was expected to close to the public Monday and relocate its 150 animal species by December.
The center is expected to make an official announcement at 11 a.m. Monday.
