Lightning Strikes Possible Along San Diego's Beaches

There is a potential for lightning strikes on San Diego County's beaches, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

A warning was issued from 1:15 p.m. to 2: 15 p.m. for San Diego International Airport suggesting the possibility of cloud to ground lightning. The thunderstorms creating the dangerous conditions were expected to move out of the area by 3 p.m.

The NWS issued a special beach hazard statement advising San Diegans that a storm moving into San Diego County may result in lightning at the beaches around 2 p.m.

The storm will move inland away from the beaches around 7 p.m., NWS said.

San Diego lifeguards used their public address system to make announcements regarding the threat of lightning at the main towers, according to a spokesperson for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The city of San Diego's beaches remain open.

When lightning occurs on the shore, it can reach from cloud to ground or cloud to water. It's best to move indoors and stay away from metal objects until the storm passes, the NWS advisory states.

The North County Transit District reported possible delays for Sprinter commuters because of the weather. The storm was causing intermittent signal issues between Oceanside and Escondido.
