Landmark Theatre Hosts Free Party

Birch North Park Theatre is opening its doors Wednesday, January 21 for a free celebration of the site's 80th birthday. At the event, they'll also ask for help from the community to keep the landmark open for business.

The theater, built in 1928, sat empty for years in the 1970s until it was renovated as a church. Soon after, the city of San Diego stepped in to restore it as a place where theatre groups would perform once again.

The project "restored the original décor and equipment, recreating the elegant atmosphere of movie palaces of a bygone age,"  according to the group's website.

On Wednesday, the doors open at 6:30 p.m. to the public for free coffee and birthday cake as they take questions and discuss the need to increase volunteerism and the role of the theatre in the North Park community.
