A new La Jolla Playhouse-born musical about Princess Diana will open on Broadway next spring.

"Diana" chronicles the story behind the royal marriage of the Princess of Wales, Charles' affair with Camilla and Diana's growing fame prior to her death in 1997.

The musical, which opened at the Playhouse this past spring, will officially debut at Broadway's Longacre Theatre a year later on March 31, 2020, according to a published report. Performances begin on March 2.

Jeanna De Waal ("Kinky Boots," "American Idiot"), who plays Princess Diana, will reprise her role. The rest of the principal cast will also reprise their roles: Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth II.

De Waal said playing Princess Diana is nothing short of an honor.

"It’s a privilege and an honor, obviously, to play a role that is so fleshed out and so well written and that has such a detailed journey throughout the play," De Waal told NBC 7 in a phone interview this past spring

The musical is directed by Tony Award-Winning Director and La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley; the book, music and lyrics are a collaboration between Bon Jovi keyboardist and composer David Bryan and composer/lyricist and Joe DiPietro (who previously worked on the Tony-winning "Memphis," another La Jolla Playhouse premiere).

In recent years, nearly a dozen La Jolla Playhouse musicals and plays have transfered to Broadway, including the breakout hit "Come From Away."
