A man who beat, tortured and strangled his girlfriend to death in 2005 learned his fate Friday.
Jack Henry Lewis Jr. was sentenced on Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the slaying of Serra Mesa resident Jan Hasegawa, 48, in September 2005.
On Friday, members of Hasegawa's family addressed the court prior to sentencing.
"When I look at pictures of Jan, I feel like my heart is breaking all over again.... You didn't just take Jan's life -- you took happy times from my entire family," a family member told the court.
Lewis was taken into custody a few days after the killing when he went to a police station and asked to speak with detectives. Officers recognized Lewis from a wanted flyer and took him into custody.
