There’s music in the air this month at Liberty Station: a series of free, outdoor concerts are headed to the Arts District, showcasing local artists spanning genres from Samba to blues.
The Liberty Station Concerts kick off this Saturday at 5 p.m. on the North Promenade – 2848 Dewey Rd. – located between Stone Brewing World Bistro and Garden and the brightly-colored “Greetings from U.S. Naval Training Station” mural.
Saturday’s show will start with opening act Sol Y Mar – Brazilian musicians, complete with Samba dancers. Headliners the B-Side Players, 10-time winners of the San Diego Music Awards, will take the stage after that, performing their blend of sounds inspired by Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico and Brazil. In the past, this nine-piece band has performed with Ben Harper, The Wailers and James Brown.
The free concert series will return on July 15 – same time, same place – with blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll musician Casey Hensley opening, followed by headliners The Highwayman, a 10-piece band that pays homage to outlaw country legends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Waylon Jennings.
On July 29, Liberty Station Concerts will showcase Vaud & the Villains, a theatrical, 1930s-style New Orleans orchestra and cabaret show highlighting the music of the early jazz era, plus R&B, gospel.
If you’re headed to the toe-tapping summer music series, bring a blanket and chairs. You may also want to get there a little early to check out what the Arts District has to offer including exhibits, galleries, film screenings and workshops.
