Judge Orders Release of Sex Predator

A convicted sex offender with a violent past will be released from custody

Judge Michael Wellington ordered that Matthew Hedge be released and sent to live at a site outside of Donovan State Prison in Otay Mesa. Wellington issued the ruling following a hearing Monday in San Diego Superior Court.

Hedge, who was a violent sexual past, will live in a trailer at the location under strict supervision.

Hedge pleaded guilty to molesting four children in 1989 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.  According to the Megan's Law Web site, he voluntarily enrolled in sex offender treatment while in prison and has been in the Department of Mental Health hospital since 1998. He was ordered into outpatient treatment in 2005 but his release was revoked within six weeks for violations in early 2006.

On Oct. 1, 2008, after more than two  years of continued in-hospital treatment, the court once again granted his petition to be placed in outpatient treatment.
