Jaycee Dugard Gives First TV Interview

Book comes in audio form, so Jaycee Dugard will tell her entire story in her own words.

As part of a promotion for a weekend special, ABC News has released a portion of a new interview with former kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard.

Dugard has written a book on her life and spares no detail of the 18 horrible years she spent being held captive by Phillip and Nancy Garrido.

The book, "A Stolen Life," will be released next week and gives gut-wrenching details of the rapes, abuse, and isolation she endured while being held in an Antioch back yard.

In the book, Dugard writes that Phillip Garrido forced her to shower with him on her first night in captivity.

"My silent tears became giant sobs....the man looks like he doesn't know how to respond; he tells me to calm down, that he is not going to do anything more to me today. The man takes me in his arms and offers comfort. I do not want comfort from this awful man, but there is no one else here and I reluctantly lean into the comfort he gives. Up until now I have not cried one time. Only on the inside. Now I feel like a rabbit being comforted by a lion. I am so scared."

She said later that same night Phillip Garrido brought her a bucket and told her that was her toilet. Dugard's life went down hill from that point for the next 18 years.

ABC's Diane Sawyer said Dugard finds no personal shame in the graphic details in the book, adding that the book shows Garrido's shame, not her own.

"I can walk in the next room and see my mom," Dugard told Sawyer. "Wow. I can decide to jump in the car and go to the beach with the girls. Wow, it's unbelievable, truly."

She also told Sawyer the importance of pine cones in her life. She said a pine cone was the last thing she touched as she tried to escape into the bushes when Garrido took her.  She now wears a pinecone necklace.

Dugard was kidnapped near her parents home in South Lake Tahoe when she was 11 in 1991.

Now 31, Dugard lives at an undisclosed location in Northern California. The b-roll from ABC shows she has gained some weight, but appears happy, healthy and relaxed in her new life.

The Garrido's were sentenced earlier this year. Phillip Garrido will spend the rest of his life in jail. His wife Nancy has a small chance of getting out of prison when she is a very old woman.
