It's 1773 All Over Again

Modern twist breathes new life into tax revolt

The day of revolt is drawing near, upon which ladies and gentleman of the commonwealth shall say NO to taxation increases made effective most recently by the government of the great state of California.

Okay, so we're not a commonwealth.

But the rest of that is true.

April 15 (Tax Day, for those not in the know), local anti-tax groups are planning mock Tea Party demonstrations.  Local events are set for Escondido, Oceanside, and Temecula, and are part of a national day of protest.  It's been loosely coordinated on the Internet.

The North County Times reports that local organizers hope to defeat Proposition 1A, a measure that would extend the sales, income and vehicle license taxes by up to two years.  Those taxes were recently raised by state lawmakers.  In exchange for the extension, the state would also set a spending cap.

The Oceanside group, Stop Taxing Us, isn't happy.  It expects more than 1,000 people to show up to the "Tea Party" which will start at Oceanside City Hall and march to Oceanside Pier.

The Escondido event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at the Post Office at 403 N. Escondido Blvd.

The rally in Temecula will take place at 11 a.m. at the Duck Pond, at Ynez and Rancho California roads.

Prop. 1A and five other measures are part of a deal worked up by Governor Schwarzenegger to cover a $42 Billion budget hole.  People vote on the measures May 19 in a special election.

In February, San Diego's waterfront was crawling with rebellious Republicans when more than 300 people showed up with bags of "tea" - which really were full of shredded paper.   Hang on. Don't add your comment below complaining about the lack of respect for the environment. These angry protestors attached strings to the bags so they could retrieve them when they were done, well, protesting.
